Big, Little Lies. There’s an interesting title. I believe lies start out little and get bigger.

Maybe there was a time when someone pointed out that you were bigger than the other girls in the room. And the little lie, “You are too big. You should be smaller,” was planted in your mind. Ten years later it has grown into, “You are fat and ugly and no one could ever love you.” Dang…

When you hear any little lie, you are faced with a pivotal moment, the pivotal moment: the purge. You cannot allow those whispers of negativity, doubt, insecurity, condemnation, fear, and stress to take root in your mind. They come unbidden, yes, but you don’t have to invite them to stay. They’ve got to go.

First, however, you have to recognize a lie when you think one. And it’s not going to show up with “lie” stamped across it, either. Lies will contain a tiny particle of truth, something everyone can agree on, then without realizing it, it turns into the biggest load of horse crap imaginable. A lie will speak to your doubts and fears, the things you’ve always wondered about yourself, and make them sound likely. It will echo whatever negativity you feel and exploit it.

I can’t list every lie here, and I’m sure you’ve already thought of a few that relate to your own life, but here are six that we can all be on the lookout for.

6 lies to reject on a daily basis:

You can’t change. Being born again to a new life of obedience and freedom because of Jesus means that every part of you can change. Your habits, your personality, your comfort zone, your attitude, your vices, they can ALL change.

Your life has no purpose. No matter how mundane or empty your life feels, God is at work. He gives your life purpose in the story He has written. You will see it one day in eternity. Have faith!

It’s too hard for you. One of my favorite phrases is “everything is figureoutable.” And of course, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It’s not too hard for you if it is what the Lord has put in front of you to accomplish. When He is leading you, you are limitless!

Your feelings isolate you. You are not the only one feeling the way you do, and there are people who want to walk with and encourage you. Also, feelings do not determine reality. There are people who can help you master what you feel when it fails to serve you.

Your fear is valid. Fear is nonsensical when we understand the God we serve. He says, “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Prayer doesn’t work. This is one of those lies that we usually don’t consciously think. But it’s there. When we neglect to pray or when we only do so as a last resort, we fail to trust that God hears us and works in us through prayer.

Remember, the first step to being aware of your thoughts as the battleground of your life is to recognize lies when you think them. Don’t let them stay, and by all means, don’t repeat them to yourself.
