Traditional
Textbooks: These resources fall under what is considered a traditional
teacher-instructional program. They use textbooks, include teachers guides, tests and
additional record keeping material. They usually follow a traditional scope and sequence
along a 180-day academic year. Textbook curricula assume you will structure your school
similar to an institutional school. |

workbook format. This structure allows much more flexibility in time (the material is

Unit Study
Approach:
A unit study is taking a theme or topic ( a unit of study) and
studying it extensively over a long period of time while integrating language arts,
science, social studies, math and fine arts as they apply. It's benefits include:
- all ages being able to learn together; each at their own academic level,
- there are no time restraints, and
- because knowledge is interrelated, is learned more readily and remembered longer.
One potential drawback is that it is very time intensive, requiring a large amount of
time on the parent's part to develop a lesson plan and compile all the needed resources. |
